Is the future of onboarding remote?

Employers could lose up to half their staff if they demand a complete return to the office, a new survey has found.

The Morning Consult survey reported by Bloomberg found that, out of 1000 adults, 39% said they would consider quitting if their bosses weren’t flexible about them working from home. It was also found that one of the main benefits of remote work included cost savings and avoiding the office commute. More than a third of those surveyed said they saved at least $5,000 a year by working from home.

With many larger companies taking bold steps into hybrid models of work - including financial giants known for having a strict work culture - the findings of this study may sound alarming, particularly to smaller companies and start-ups currently driving recruitment, growth and scale. So how can founders advance these aims with a fresh, yet disconnected and dispersed workforce?

We believe that helping employers and founders establish effective ways to fully capitalise on 'rare' physical meetings, while still leaning on blended-work models to ensure a healthy flow of new and happy recruits, is the way to avoid causing a mass exodus with a demand to return to office. For example, as companies embrace digital nomadism and asynchronous work, taking advantage of the increase in productivity and a greater talent pool to choose from that comes with remote working, so the onboarding process will become crucial for earning employee loyalty, and building a company culture that they may otherwise struggle to produce remotely.

Founders and employers need therefore to consider accessing more flexible, physical, collaborative workspaces to create routine events such as these: fostering successful team building and onboarding sessions. Spaces that utilise the latest cutting edge collaborative technology to bring their teams together and build a sense of corporate ethos among all employees, new and experienced.
